IP Geolocation, ISP, and ASN Lookup

A public IP address is both a routing identifier and a useful starting point for network research. A lookup can connect it with the country, region, city, ISP, organization, ASN, CIDR range, time zone, and approximate coordinates reported by current network datasets.

These fields describe the network that announced or used the address when the source data was updated. They do not identify the individual behind a connection or reveal a precise street address.

How to Read IP Location and Network Ownership

Address facts confirm whether the input is a public IPv4 or IPv6 address. Location fields estimate where the network exit may be, while ISP, organization, ASN, and CIDR fields describe network ownership and routing. Reading those groups separately avoids treating an estimated city as a registration fact.

Country results are generally more stable than city, postal code, or coordinates. Mobile networks, carrier gateways, cloud regions, VPNs, proxies, and newly reassigned address blocks can all make the displayed location differ from the device location.

Use IP Address Data for Practical Checks

Compare an observed address with the expected provider or ASN when diagnosing proxy exits, access logs, localization, or routing changes. Copy the summary or export JSON when the result needs to be reviewed elsewhere.

When registration ownership matters, confirm the result with WHOIS or RDAP. Geolocation and registration answer different questions, and neither should be used as proof of a person's identity or exact location.

Fields in an IP Lookup Result

A useful lookup separates routing and registration data from estimated geolocation. Read the fields together: an ASN and CIDR can remain correct even when a city estimate is stale, while an organization name may describe a hosting company rather than the customer using one address. Empty values mean the source has no dependable value, not that the property does not exist.

Location Accuracy and the Limits of IP Geolocation

IP geolocation is an inference built from routing, allocation, provider, and observed network data. Country assignments are often more stable than city, postal code, or coordinates, but every field can lag behind a transfer or routing change. A result should be treated as the best available network estimate at lookup time, not a GPS reading or identity record.

A VPN or proxy normally makes the lookup describe its exit server. A mobile connection can share a carrier gateway far from the handset. Corporate gateways centralize many offices, CDN addresses may represent globally distributed edge capacity, and cloud addresses can show a provider region rather than a workload owner. Compare multiple signals before treating a difference as an error.

IP Lookup, WHOIS or RDAP, and Reverse DNS

These methods answer different questions. Start with the question you need to resolve, then use another method as corroboration instead of expecting one result to contain every fact.

Read a Redacted Lookup Example

Suppose an exported result shows the masked address 8.8.8.x, ASN AS15169, and prefix 8.8.8.0/24. The address is intentionally incomplete, so it cannot be queried or used as a complete endpoint from the example alone. AS15169 identifies the routed autonomous system, while /24 means the displayed IPv4 prefix covers addresses that share the first 24 network bits.

If the organization aligns with Google and the expected service, that supports a network-level interpretation. A displayed city still does not prove where the querying device or any specific machine is located. For an access-log investigation, record the timestamp and compare the prefix and ASN with RDAP, reverse DNS, application authentication, and your own event data.

Is IP geolocation lookup accurate?

Country-level results are generally more stable, with city and postal code accuracy affected by carrier exits, mobile networks, address assignments, and database update times. Do not treat the results as pinpoint locations.

Why is the displayed city different from my actual location?

What a website sees is often the public IP of a carrier exit, enterprise gateway, mobile network node, or proxy server, which may be located in another city.

Will query records be uploaded?

No. The page saves only the latest five queries in the current browser for quick reuse, and you can clear that local history at any time.

Does this tool support IPv6?

Yes. It supports valid public IPv4 and IPv6 addresses. Private, loopback, link-local, documentation-reserved, and other non-publicly routable addresses are rejected.

What information can an IP address reveal?

A public IP can support estimates of country, region, city, time zone, ISP, organization, ASN, and routed prefix. It does not reveal a verified person, exact device, home address, browsing history, or precise real-time position.

Can an IP lookup identify a person?

No. The result describes a public network address and its associated datasets. Identifying a subscriber generally requires provider records, a valid legal process, a reliable timestamp, and other evidence.

Why do two IP lookup sites show different locations?

Providers use different sources and update schedules, and they may choose different representative points for the same network. Compare country, ASN, organization, prefix, and timestamps instead of relying only on the city.

Does an IP lookup show a VPN or proxy location?

Usually it describes the public exit used by the VPN or proxy, not the original device connection. Some classification fields may suggest hosting or proxy use, but they are signals rather than certainty.

What is an ASN in an IP lookup?

An autonomous system number identifies a network that announces routes under a common routing policy. It is useful for confirming the routed operator, but it does not necessarily identify the customer using one address.
